Our work in Syria
In Syria, Heartland Alliance International (HAI) utilizes a trauma-informed approach to strengthen the capacity of detention centers and civil society organizations (CSOs) to uphold child safeguarding and protection. In so doing, HAI supports Children Associated with Armed Forces and Armed Groups (CAAFAG) with comprehensive Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS), Access to Justice services, and enriching educational activities.
At a glance: rights situation
Detention shelters
Five years after the defeat of ISIL, thousands of Syrian and Iraqi children still reside in detention centers and camps.
Trial
They have inadequate protection and services, many still face trial for ISIL affiliation, and some are held without charges.
Child protection
Current protections do not adhere to internationally recognized frameworks, such as the Minimum Standard for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action.
Our response
Child Protection and Safeguarding
HAI is laying the foundational policy framework for child protection and child safeguarding in NES detention centers.
