Our work in The United States
Established in 1987, the Marjorie Kovler Center (MKC) provides mental health, medical, legal, and social services; trains and educates locally and globally; and advocates for the needs of survivors and the end of torture worldwide. Our model emphasizes the political dimensions of torture and forced migration and applies a strengths-based, trauma-informed framework to support each survivor’s healing process.
MKC programs
Holistic
Our care team works collaboratively to create an integrated and welcoming environment. We provide core services on site, including individual and group therapy, primary care, psychiatry, occupational therapy, and case management.
Community-based
Torture and displacement break the bonds of the individual with their family and community, so the community must be involved in the response. Our volunteers contribute over 10,000 hours annually.
Culturally and linguistically adapted
Our multilingual staff tailor services to survivors’ cultural background and needs, and our robust interpreter network spans 50+ languages.
Volunteer opportunities
There are many ways to get involved at the Kovler Center.
Join us and together, let's make a difference
Our volunteers:
- Provide interpretation and translation in many languages
- Accompany participants to appointments
- Offer English as a second language tutoring
- Provide pro bono professional services
Please contact our wonderful volunteer coordinator, Trudi Langendorf tlangendorf@HAInternational.org, to find out how you can join the team.
Why volunteer at the Marjorie Kovler Center
"Having worked for decades with a wide variety of public and private organizations, I have never experienced better mentoring, guidance, and training than what [Kovler Center] offers to its volunteers. As a pro bono interpreter, I have been offered myriad training opportunities that underscore the holistic treatment approach for culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, community-based care at the heart of Kovler’s mission to assist [Survivors of Torture] in the healing process.”
