Xavier Sánchez: A Family Business Transforming Lives in Pasto
I’ve learned so much through the project, and my business is growing. Now even my children work with me… it’s a family business. — Xavier
Xavier Alexander Sánchez Narea is a 42-year-old Venezuelan migrant, entrepreneur, and father. Like millions of others, he migrated to Colombia seeking safety and better opportunities. In 2018, he arrived in the city of Pasto with his 64-year-old mother and two teenage children, carrying with him the hope of rebuilding a dignified life.
Thanks to his determination—and the comprehensive support provided by Heartland Alliance International—Xavier has not only secured his immigration status, but also transformed his business into a thriving source of income and pride for his family.
Stability and access to rights
With legal guidance and support, Xavier and his son were able to navigate Colombia’s immigration system. They canceled a no-longer-relevant refugee application and successfully obtained Permits for Temporary Protection (PPT)—essential documents that grant legal residency, work authorization, and access to services like health care, education, and banking.
As of May 2025, more than 1.9 million Venezuelans have received PPTs, according to Migración Colombia, making this an essential tool for stabilization and long-term integration.
Entrepreneurship that fuels the local economy
Xavier owns and operates a household appliance repair and spare parts business in Pasto. With technical support and seed capital from Heartland Alliance International, he has been able to:
- Upgrade his tools and equipment
- Expand his inventory
- Diversify his services
Today, his business offers:
- Home delivery services
- Digital payment options
- Electronic invoicing
- Service to both residential clients and local businesses
Xavier’s enterprise is more than just a personal success—it reflects the significant contribution that migrant entrepreneurship makes to the local economy. In fact, Venezuelan migrants contributed nearly $530 million USD to Colombia’s economy in 2022, highlighting their role as active agents of development.
A business that builds a future
One of Xavier’s greatest accomplishments is that his children are now part of the business. Through the employability pathway provided by Heartland Alliance International, both children gained access to certified technical training and support to strengthen their job profiles.
His daughter also received assistance to validate her high school diploma in Colombia—a crucial step toward her independence and professional growth.
A new beginning with dignity
Xavier’s story illustrates how comprehensive support—covering legal status, livelihood, education, and employment—can change lives. Each step forward helps build a foundation of dignity, stability, and hope.
At Heartland Alliance International, we know that behind every migrant’s journey there is a story of courage, family, and resilience. By supporting individuals like Xavier, we don’t just empower one person—we strengthen the social and economic fabric of entire communities.
