Exciting announcement from Heartland Alliance International (HAI)
Dear Colleagues and Partners,
I am thrilled to announce that as of May 2024, Heartland Alliance International (HAI) is now a fully independent 501(c)(3) organization!
This exciting update comes after many months of careful planning and preparations with our team, partners, donors, and Board of Directors to launch HAI into a new era of impact. As an independent nonprofit, (HAI) will continue its mission of securing the rights and well-being of marginalized people and communities worldwide, including in the U.S. through the Marjorie Kovler Center. I am also delighted to share HAI’s new website! Please take some time to read about our ongoing work, get involved, and support HAI in this exciting new chapter.
Our organization’s proud history of answering the call to work on some of the toughest human rights issues in some of the most challenging environments shines a light on our path forward. The Marjorie Kovler Center was founded in 1987 to develop innovative, holistic programming for survivors of torture – the first organization to do so within 500 miles of Chicago. Nearly 40 years later, the Kovler Center is one of the world’s preeminent centers for specialized torture treatment. In recent decades, HAI brought those approaches to other countries including Colombia, Iraq, and most recently, Ukraine. Today, we work across the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. HAI has a staff of over 350 global human rights champions and a network of more than 1,000 pro bono volunteers. HAI teams work through a combination of direct services, policy advocacy, capacity strengthening, and local partnerships. In 2023 alone, HAI reached over 93,000 participants with life-changing services and support!
HAI works with Fundavencol, a civil society organization co-led by Colombian and Venezuelan women leaders in Colombia on a mural painting to share messages designed to protect and empower Venezuelan migrants.
Empowering Communities: Transformative Impact of Heartland Alliance International Programs
I am reminded every day that our teams are catalyzing lasting change; we are meeting our participants wherever they are, with what they need to survive, thrive, and demand their rights. As one of our program participants in the Democratic Republic of the Congo shared about the impact of our Fikra Timamu program which expanded access to community-based mental healthcare:
Finally, as many of you know, we are planning a landmark Power of Healing event in Chicago on June 11th to celebrate the Marjorie Kovler Center and their future as part of an independent HAI. We look forward to seeing many of you on this special evening.
Thank you again for being a part of this journey.
Best regards,
Melissa
